Evidence-based therapy for dizziness, vertigo, BPPV, and balance disorders — helping you move through the world with confidence.
What Is Vestibular Rehabilitation?
Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) is a specialized form of physical therapy designed to address conditions that arise from dysfunction in the vestibular system, the part of the inner ear and brain responsible for controlling balance and eye movement. Vestibular disorders are more common than many people realize, and their symptoms — dizziness, vertigo, unsteadiness, and visual disturbances — can be profoundly disruptive to daily life.
The good news is that vestibular rehabilitation is highly effective, and many patients experience significant improvement within a relatively short course of treatment. At Ascent Physical Therapy, we provide expert, evidence-based vestibular rehab for patients throughout South Riding and Northern Virginia.
Our Approach
Vestibular conditions vary widely in their presentation and underlying cause. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), the most common vestibular disorder, is caused by displaced calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear and typically responds rapidly to specific repositioning maneuvers. Other conditions, such as vestibular neuritis, labyrinthitis, and unilateral or bilateral hypofunction, require a different approach: exercises designed to retrain the brain to compensate for the impaired vestibular signal through a process called vestibular adaptation and habituation.
Our vestibular evaluations are thorough and systematic. We assess eye movement, balance, gait, positional responses, and functional mobility to accurately identify the source of your symptoms. From there, we design a precise, individualized treatment program. We also incorporate balance retraining and fall prevention strategies, which are especially important for older adults whose risk of falling increases significantly with vestibular impairment.
What We Provide
You Don’t Have to Live With Dizziness.
Vestibular conditions are often mistakenly accepted as a normal part of aging or attributed to causes that are difficult to treat. The truth is most patients with vestibular dysfunction respond very well to physical therapy. If you are experiencing dizziness, spinning sensations, unsteadiness, difficulty with head movements, or a fear of falling, vestibular rehab may be exactly what you need. We treat patients ages 9 and up throughout South Riding, Ashburn, Chantilly, Sterling, and the greater Northern Virginia area. No referral is required to begin.
