Dry Needling in South Riding, VA

TPS-certified trigger point dry needling to relieve muscle pain, release tension, and accelerate recovery.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a minimally invasive technique in which a thin, solid filament needle — like an acupuncture needle — is inserted directly into a myofascial trigger point to release tension, reduce pain, and restore normal muscle function. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles. It is a highly effective adjunct to physical therapy for patients with musculoskeletal pain and movement dysfunction. At Ascent Physical Therapy, our team holds a Trigger Point Specialist (TPS) certification, reflecting advanced training in this technique.

Our Approach

When a muscle develops a trigger point — a hyperirritable, contracted knot within the muscle fiber — it can cause local pain, referred pain in distant areas, and restricted movement. Traditional stretching and massage can help, but dry needling reaches the trigger point directly, provoking a local twitch response that releases the contraction, increases blood flow to the area, and resets the muscle’s neural signaling. Patients often notice an immediate reduction in tightness and pain following treatment, with continued improvement over subsequent sessions.

Dry needling at Ascent Physical Therapy is always integrated into a broader physical therapy plan. It’s just another of our evidence-based interventions for the most comprehensive and lasting results.

Is Dry Needling Right for You?

Dry needling is appropriate for patients experiencing muscle pain, tightness, or restricted movement that has not fully responded to other treatments, as well as those looking to accelerate recovery from injury or surgery.

It’s safe for most patients, though it is not appropriate for everyone. Our team will screen you during your evaluation and discuss whether dry needling is a good fit for your condition. We treat patients ages 9 and up throughout South Riding, Ashburn, Chantilly, Sterling, and the broader Northern Virginia region.
